November 7, 2006 Fishing at Shabbona
22 inches, 5 pound 3 ounces We had a nice little warm-up to 56 degrees today, so I hit the lake. First time out in 3 Weeks (ouch!!!) Launched the boat at 11:30 AM and fished until 4 PM (almost Dark). Water temp was 45 degrees and visibility was good at about 2 feet. Overcast, almost no wind, lake was empty, had the weedbeds to myself. Stated out in the NE Bay, grubs/chatterbaits, casting for an hour, nothing, not even a single runt bass. Cut back across the lake to the little bay north of the boat launch, started working a blue-black Yum Grub along the outer weededge in 3-5 feet of water, vvvery slowly, Bingo !!! Bass on the second cast, a super yellow colored 15 incher (I even took his picture he was so cool looking), followed by a pair of 14's and a 16 incher. Then the bite dried up (I never catch anything big over there). Next stop the East Bay. There were more weeds left up there than I would have guessed. Worked the blue-black Yum Grub in 1-4 feet, nothing. Made my way across the big bare flat, and right where the weeds taper off, Smack !!!! a nice 19 incher hits 10 feet from the boat. Keep working the grub until I hit the north end of the weeds, then pick up the chatterbait again, .....first cast ....MASH !!!!! "??dinky Little muskie?? or Nice Bass???" flashes through my mind.. ..a split second later I see the fish.. NICE BASS !!!!!! and that was all she wrote. Six strikes in about 5 hours, but can't complain with a 5 pounder. Get out there while you can. The Bass are shallow and Hungry. Nasty weather will be here soon.
