May 31, 2007 Fishing at Shabbona Lake State Park, Shabbona Illinois ?????
????? I went out for a few hours before the rain arrived. Water temp was 72, clarity about 1.5 to 2 feet. Up to the NE Bay looking for bass. I picked off 7 or 8 small bass on the blue-black weedless grubs. Couldn't get anything big to bite so I started experimenting. Gold Spinnerbait Zero, Chatterbait Zero, Floating Traps Zero. Back to the soft plastics, a few more runts. Hmmm..... A few weeks ago, I picked up a pack of Gulp Gobys at Dick's (overall look is Okay, action looks Terrible), so I tried one. Casting in 3-5 feet of water around the lilypad edges, third cast with the Goby, BANG, feels decent, but then it doesn't run, I feel the "death roll" of a channel cat on the other end of my line. 24 incher, not too uncommon to get a channel cat while bass fishing. A few casts later, BANG 15 inch walleye !!!! Followed closely by 3 more channel cats between 22-24 inches. and a 17 inch walleye.
But never a bass on the Gulp Goby ??? This was a strange day. I've never caught this many non-bass in a single day of "bass" fishing. Chased off by the oncoming storm.... I'll be back... Good Luck Everybody !!!!
