March 20 and 21, 2008 Muskie Fishing at Lake Kinkaid
Day 1 Our second ever trip to Kinkaid. Brad "Hawg Czar" , Wes "Ace" Wooddell, and I took a little 2 day Spring Break run down to southern IL. Brad with a nice 41 incher. Our timing was not exactly ideal. The day before we arrived, they had record rainfalls, and the lake came up 4 FEET in 24 hours and looked like thick chocolate milk. The lake seemed to almost shut down. Water temps 48 to 55 degrees, visibility 2-4 inches. This fish tangled with a modified chatterbait. The Chatterbait Won !!!!
Day 2 We launched at 9 AM feeling like we had a good feel for the lake conditions and the mood of the fish. Being multispecies anglers, we threw the muskies a curve ball. We downsized to bass size weedless grubs, blue-black as always, and the same old grub pattern put this alligator in the net.
47 inches (46 and 3/4 ths so I'll call it 47 !!!) Estimated weight 28+ pounds. same fish below
Here's a Video Clip of this fish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxScumimx4Y I had one other smaller muskie shake me out, probably in the 36-38 inch range, and boated a nice plump 20.5 inch Largemouth Bass. After a 28+ pound muskie, a 4 pound bass looks pretty tiny !!!
BONUS !!! I also have some great video footage of the DNR guys measuring a pair of 45 inchers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9x8jqmypnA
Good Luck Everybody !!! I hope to see you on the water very soon.
