Bass Fishing at Spring Lake South, near Peoria IL

Day 1 of 3

5 pounds 10 ounces

My first trip of 2008 turned out pretty well. The action was a little slow, but with a 5+ pounder under the belt, I can't ask for sympathy.

Now Goose Season is still open, so you can't launch a boat until 1 PM on either lake,

and it gets dark at 4:45 PM, so the fishing day is really short, but the painful drive is more than paid for with Big Fat Winter Bass.

Water temp was 43 to 44 degrees (had recently been frozen, but the freak warm front and 4 inches of rain in 24 hours burned the ice off quickly). The visibility was about a foot, and I fished the exact same pattern as last winter (weedless plastic grubs around dead lilypad stalks, scroll back to the Jan 2007 and Feb 2006 reports).
