August 1, 2008 Fishing at Delavan Lake, Delavan WI
5.0 Pounds
I'm a Newbie on this lake, but the bass are Big and Friendly !!!! Joey and I launched at 7:30 AM and fished straight through until noon. The water temp was 80 degrees and the lake's water has clouded up a bit with an algae bloom, visibility was 2-3 feet in most places. We focused on the tapering weed edges in 10-15 feet of water, using mainly plastic worms rigged weedless with a bullet weight. Same exact technique as July 24, 2008. Most strikes came on the fall as just a sensation of weight and pressure. Set The Hook !!! Best colors were plain brown and a really strange looking orange and chartreuse Wal-Mart brand plastic worm with a small twister-tail (6 inch). The action was hot and fast. By noon it was Roasting Hot so we took a 2.5 hour swim/play break and cooled down. We spent the remainder of the day 50/50 swimming and fishing, and the fish were more than willing to do their part !!! We ended with 2 fish hitting the 5 Pound Mark, and 8 other "legals" (Delavan has a 18" bass limit), and a school of 17 inchers.
Delavan is a Fantastic Bass Fishery, but it is not a pristine Wisconsin wilderness !!!! The shoreline is 100% developed, launching is expensive and very limited, parking is tough, and it is packed with skiers throwing 3 foot wakes all day. But if you know this in advance, it's a cool lake/playground.
Good Luck Everybody !!!
